This past Sunday Travis Hunter signed a pretty lucrative contract for himself after being drafted number two overall in the NFL draft this past April. His rookie contract is 4 years, $46.65 million dollars with $30.57 million being paid upfront and his entire contract is guaranteed.
GUARANTEED MONEY!
That’s what we all want as business owners right? I want a guarantee on how much money I’ll make…from my marketing!
Let me ask a question, why is marketing, specifically anything a third party controls, the only thing a “guarantee” is requested?
Do you ask a sales guy a year in what is he going to guarantee for you? What about a front office employee? Project manager? Sales manager? Installer?
Probably not, right?
I am not coming at this as an angry marketer, just from the standpoint of hoping to change how you look at marketing.
Let’s break it down from a financial perspective just looking at yearly salaries
- Receptionist – $33,677
- Project Manager – $92,725
- Sales manager – $86,555
- Sales associate – $79,312
- Installer – $50,970
- Marketing company – $50,400
All salaries are averages for North Carolina pulled from Google except the marketing company – that is an average of $4,200 per month
The marketing company is the second smallest salary you will pay all year, for most companies, yet the highest is expected from them from a guaranteed perspective.
Why is that?
Well, it’s actually simple. We manage a lot of money everyday for you. The average home service contractor in North Carolina spends $300/day, which equates to about $9,000 per month. THAT IS JUST GOOGLE! These numbers don’t include Facebook, billboards, TV, vibe, post cards and numerous other things.
Here is where I want to change your perspective, though. YOU DON’T PAY US YOUR MARKETING BUDGET EVERY MONTH SO STOP SAYING THAT!
You pay the marketing company to manage your dollars, NOT to get you leads. You are paying a marketing company to analyze data, figure out what is and is not working, predict what might work and then come to you with the plan of attack based on what data suggest.
Notice I said analyze, predict, plan and suggest. Nowhere in there was there a guarantee that anything would work. We read data and make moves based off of that. Do we need to know how to implement a plan? YES! Is it always going to work? NO!
We cannot guarantee that anything will work that we do, but we can say the data suggest it will work a goodly portion of the time. Any marketing company that guarantees a certain amount of leads every month is lying to you and you should run at all cost. Those leads will suck, will never convert and will cost you more than just money. It will cost you time, energy and resources to fix what they break.
My suggestion would be to find a marketing agency that is reputable, reliable and relatable. The three R’s
- Reputable – Google reviews, social media reviews, ask around about them.
- Reliable – have proof they can deliver on what they are saying
- Relatable – they understand your industry and your company
Be patient, create a relationship, be patient, communicate, and be patient.
Did I say be patient?
If I didn’t, BE PATIENT!
