FREE AGENCY

The other night I was watching my beloved Phillies play the Miami Marlins and the announcers were talking about the pick ups that the Phillies had made during free agency and how big of an impact they had made. They were particularly talking about Max Kepler.

I was looking at Kep’s stats and I was like…”he really hasn’t made that big of a difference.”

When you look at his stats, they are not that amazing. He’s batting 218, only has 9 home runs through 72 games and  below average 26 RBI’s. These are not exactly game changing stats Kepler is putting up this year. But, then I looked a little deeper.

He’s drawn 27 walks, 48 hits and has scored 32 times. With only 9 home runs, that means he’s scored 32 out of 75 times he’s been on base. For the statisticians out there, that’s a 43% chance he’s going to CLOSE the deal if he gets on base. By the way, he has a 317 on base percentage – which means he’s on base over 30% of his at bats.

Basically, I am not looking at his intangibles, just the vanity stats. The vanity stats are batting average, home runs and RBI’s; but behind the vanity stats lies the meat and potatoes of his value to the team. He gets on base and then he’s got almost a 50% chance of scoring.

Let me ask you a question…are you so focused on the vanity metrics for your company that you don’t see the value of your marketing company?

Are you so focused on the number of leads, appointments and closed deals that you overlook the real value in the background?

What if the value was you show up in search results over 30% of the time for paid? Maybe you’re SEO has moved you from page 6 to page 2. What if the set rate for appointments is over 80% and the close rate is now over 60% because the quality of leads is so much better now?

All I’m saying is, look below the surface. Take a breath and see what’s actually happening everywhere instead of looking at the vanity stats.

Shoot, you might be like me and actually start to like the guy…I may have to buy a Max Kepler jersey now!
